DB9 to RJ45 cable question

I have a Grinch RenC set up. I have moved into a new house and I have found that the DB9 to RJ45 cable that goes from Comm port on computer to RJ45 in on the RenC is too short. My question is, will a standard DB9 to RJ45 cable avail on EBay be ok or does it need to be made to suit?
Cheers, Terry

I'm fairly certain that a standard cable won't work. At least it never did for me. This is probably what you need::

Also if you already have a cable that works, just get a double female adapter and add a standard cat5 network cable. But remember there are some distance limitations when connected directly to the serial port on your computer.

Here's a link to the section in the Wiki that gives everything you need to know about the Renard data cables, pinouts and how to make them.

You could extend it with a coupler and another cat 5 cable.

Couplers like this NEW-Cat5 RJ45 Lan Network Ethernet Cable Extender Joiner Adapter Coupler
