Filament mini lights - how to remove the paint?

I'd like to re-paint some of my filament mini lights, however what's the best method to remove the existing transparent paint?

Also, what kind of paint should they be coated with, bearing in mind of course that filament lights get pretty warm (I want to use something 'safe' given that they are running on mains voltage (240 VAC in my case), and that also won't smell when warm).
 
Any time I've ever seen someone do this years ago they always used a stained glass paint by krylon I believe it was, not sure if that is available where you are or not. As far as removing the old paint you might be able to use an acetone or paint thinner.
