File attachments?

I would like to see a limit on picture size. Typically most pictures should not require more than 640x480 and on a very rare occasion 800x600. I’m asking that software be in place that will allow up loading any picture but will automatically reduce the size to no larger than 640x480 and keeping the original aspect ratio. Maybe even converting everything to JPG to keep the file size and downloading time to a minimum.

I'm not so sure about that. It's fine for photos, but not for schematics passed as images. I was always running into those limitations on the cc site. And with broadband being so common these days and hd space so cheap, I'm not sure that there is any reason to limit the size these days to anything under 1024x768, or maybe even larger.

Actually, I would rather see schematics in PDF format because of the nearly infinite scalability. There are plenty of free drivers on the net that install as a printer, then anything that can print, can make PDF file; multiple pages too.

You can also convert from nearly anything to nearly anything through http://media-convert.com/. You can pass it a file from your computer or a website.
 
I can currently set limits on the file types and sizes that can be uploaded. So we can easily take care of Ernie's request. The file attachment mod will take care of the pdf request as well. But Phil makes a good point about broadband, cheap storage and bandwidth.

Anyone else want to chime in and help choose the route we will go?
 
I think nothing should be automatic - there should be as few restrictions as possible, (but we could post some guidelines). That way you don't run into problems when someone has something special they need to post (like a schematic).

For example, there could be 'convert to PDF' or 'reduce to 640x480' options, but they would be optional.

That way, we can encourage people to spare us some bandwidth and disk space, but they won't have to struggle with the system if there is a special case.

Matt, The only problem with putting options in place is some times the finger is quicker then the mind. I agree there should be standards in place. and when including an attachment to your post that maybe instead of options. We should have format choices. Picture at a set type and standard resolution and something else like .pdf for documents.

That's a good idea! I wasn't suggesting actual checkboxes as much as suggesting the idea that the file attachment should be flexible to accommodate any need that may arise.

Another cool feature would be an option to show a thumbnail instead. Maybe make this a default if the picture is larger then a predetermined limit. Also with a continuous thread format such as this site, the memorized last view post location will tend to move down out of view as previously viewed graphic cells are loaded above. The thumbnail should still be large enough that you can still get an idea of what it looks like; something about the size of Brian’s avatar.

I understand that most people have high speed internet, but also realize that this site has global users and not everyone will live in a large city that high speed would even be an option.
 
A couple points on this topic.

I think some other boards do not care about the image size as long as the file size does not exceed 100k.

Another thing I do personally is run all my pictures thru photoshop elements and save for web. File sizes will drop to less than 10% of the original.

Could there be options when submitting a jpg attachment to resize it to a chosen size or resave the image with websafe color compression.

These could be options available on the upload screen for those who do not have the software to perform these tranformations themselves.

I have no idea if these types of thing can even be plugged into a automated website.

Just throwing out ideas.

primoPDF is my weapon of choice.

primoPDF is my weapon of choice.

I had never used primoPDF. I had been using an Adobe product on my laptop that is a print driver, and on my desktop I was using PDF995. I have actually created PDF's of all of the "OLD" Vixen Support Forum-> LEDTriks and just need a place to upload them.

As for primoPDF it is very nice and I will probably swith to it.
 
File attachments are now integrated here on this board.
