Angus, you really should try xlights, these kind of effects are rather simple.

How about a tutorial as to how to do this? It is a great effect.
If you are using a matrix to map your props/elements this may make more sense as to how to create these sort of effects .
This is the final video file of the entire effect .
I only know how to apply this in HLS , but I am sure there is a way to do it in other sequencers also .
For any one considering what type of effects for a strip pixel star some visuals for inspiration purposes only .
I have been testing / creating 100's of custom effects for star specific props and have come to the conclusion that the simplest are the among the best , as in
easy on the eyes and not to strobish . The simple intensity chase is one my #1 favorites as the pixels remain static .
The camera cannot catch the full effect , but you will get the gist .
