Or make your life easier and go wireless with Mr. Nerkle's marvelous wireless devices (http://diychristmas.org/store) . There are some inexpensive Zigbee Pro units on ebay now, the USB adapter boards are usually less expensive than most USB to serial converters and you do not need to worry about running wires inside to outside (usually the longest and most troublesome run)!
