Lots of recent posts vanished

I tried to log into the site this morning and there was a database error.

Later on it said the site was being "upgraded"

Now it's back... and lots of recent content has vanished.


It seems every time some of us work to try to keep content flowing here, technology thwarts us. I had a thread that was at least 3 days old completely vanish. I don't know how far back it actually was that people's content got erased.

Yesterday I spent a bunch of time here made numerous posts and comments. Gone.
 
I used to use tools that are built into Linux to make a full backup of the green site daily. It was just a gzip backup of the site and database but nonetheless, it was very current. And it sure wasn't rocket science to create the script and schedule it! The end of the script also copied the resulting gzip file to a computer in my house which ran 24x7 and giving me an off-site backup. Again, using common tools. I also contracted with my host provider who made daily backups of their own.

Easy things to do to help prevent unhappy situations like this....

Wouldn't you at least offer an apology or explanation? :unsure: It took a couple of weeks for posting to resume last time. Sometimes it takes awhile and significant time to compose content. I'd hate to lose this goldmine of information but...
 
I think our (or at least "my") little "lets see if we can revive the red site" experiment has run its course.

Every time we've made a modicum of progress, it's been thwarted. Not directly anyone's fault, but having an absentee admin/owner doesn't help.

I'm considering moving the bulk of my posting over to the green site (diychristmas.org for those who don't know). I would encourage others to give it a try as well.
 
Moving to another site to share idea's and the joy of Christmas that can at least be trusted is better than losing everything, including the friend's we've made.

I like the user interface here better but...
 
As my year wraps up, the recent technical issues have me considering ending my support here. This site has offered plenty of ideas and advice, with help that’s exceeded my expectations. I’m planning to support DIYChristmas.org since it’s been dependable. I’ll keep checking in, and if things improve, I’ll gladly return and offer my support again. It’s just sad to think such valuable knowledge and experience could vanish due to lack of interest.

I'll see you on the other site!

I’ve considered that as well, but I need to make every dollar I spend count, being on a limited income (retired.) With the future of this site uncertain, it makes more sense to invest my money where it can do more good. I’ll still visit this site for as long as it’s around. Maybe someday, if this site becomes more reliable, I’ll consider investing in it again.

Not to place blame, but if the leader or owner isn’t invested in the site, it’s hard for the team to stay motivated. I’ve begun downloading files from the Wiki that I might need in case the site ever goes down. Maybe I can get them uploaded to the DIYChristmas.org site—just need to check first.
 
I'm not "leaving" this site, but I fear the site might be leaving us.

It's no fun to invest a bunch of time into creating content and then worry that it will just disappear overnight.

It's no fun to work to build up momentum, only to have it vanish overnight because of yet another technical glitch.

It's no fun when there are zero posts from site management acknowledging these issues, much less talking about how they will be alleviated in the future.

It's no fun when we had a TEN page thread about "the future" and how to improve this site, but many of the suggestions require participation from the admin, which doesn't exist.


For at least the short term, until these issues get addressed here, I'll be moving any threads/comments/posts that I don't want to worry about instantly disappearing over to the green site. I'll still be here though.
 
I'm not leaving either. I've been here since the beginning. I actually paid my membership support twice, because of the memory loss. I just won't be putting in the effort on anything that I'd be worried of losing, until I feel confident that it's not going to disappear shortly afterward.
 
Maybe we should download it and repost on the Green site. There’s a lot of good stuff on there. Not sure how to download it, but willing to try if I can get some directions.
 
Host server crashed, they have stabilized the servers and should be restoring from backups slowly as they mesh the missing posts with current data.
