Renard connection question

So looks like my show cpu is toast. I have a laptop I am gonna use sucks losing that. I had a lot on there. Anyway my laptop does not have the rs-232 connector only usb and ethernet. Can I use either to go from cpu to renard 24.

You just need a usb serial cable. Goto to Amazon and search for it. Does the renard 24 use 485? If so, get one of those instead of serial.

Renard ss24 does use rs485 but you need to un-jump J1.

So looks like With the usb adapter you have to change the cat 5 connections on both ends. I changed it on the adapter side to the 4 wires I need to change the other end to 4 wires. I was only using 2 wires wondered why I had no connection

RS-232 only needs 2 wires.
RS-485 Use 2 wires with an optional ground.

The wiki on the cat 5 end shows pins 1,2 4,5 easy enough since I have to cut it anyway

Well I made the new cable for the usb adapter and still no connection to the cpu. I have power on my board. I think everything is correct in vixen. Idk what could be the issue. It was a fairly easy set up. When I went directly to my old cpu. I hate to give up just not my style but idk. I am at a loss

Idk if it help but hb,zc,sd,fe,de lights on the board do not flash when running a sequence

One last thing the power light on the board is lit. So I think it is a connection between the computer usb adapter but I redid the wires a couple times and still nothing.

Try with just the usb-serial cable plugged into the serial port on the SS24 to make sure the adapter is working and you have it configured properly (correct Com port) in Vixen. Post a pic of each end of your CAT adapter cable wired to the USB-serial adapter and the RJ45 end.

A screen shot of the controller configuration in Vixen might help as well.

We got it working. He had some settings issues and a bad cable

I got it to work from what I can tell is my cat5 connection on the renard side was incorrect. So I used a pre-made cable and only cut the side for the usb adapter and bam it works. So now the fun begins. Huge thank you to all that have helped me.

I agree and for fun I made a new cable and that one works. Gotta chalk it up to a famous Forrest gump line. Oh well bottom line is it's working.

This year, I have the advantage of a stereo microscope. You'd think I'd never make a mistake then. Nope. First cable was perfect. I replaced the end on the second cable six times before I finally got it right. I made several more after and they all worked.

I don't know, maybe it's the first sign of alzheimer's. They only test with four things you have to remember and Ihave no problem. Here, I have eight.
