Soldering Irons

What spare tip would you recommend using with either of the CSI-STATION1A or the CSI-STATION-3DLF?
This tip...KD-M-B conicle tip is out of stock.

The KD-M-1 is good for fine work but I really like the KD-M-0.8D or the KD-M-1.2D which are the small chisel tips. You would be surprised how much faster Triac legs and ground plane soldering points heat up using the flat side of the chisel tip.

Or you could forgo the extra tip and get this from Ebay. They are for Hakko but work fine CSI.

You can also search for 'Hakko Tip' on eBay and get quite a few options. Almost all of which are cheaper than going thru one of the retail vendors, especially when you factor in shipping charges. I was just checking at CSI, and MPJA, and they both wanted $4.95 for 1 tip, and a minimum of $11.00 to ship via UPS. They don't even offer first class mail. They won't be getting any of my tip business..........

Great tip!

ha ha ha I made a funny!

I have 1.5 dia. chisel, 0.5R and 0.2R conical tips. Would these both be categorized as "fine" tips?

In the past I've only used cheap solder irons so I'm only familiar with conical tips. When would you use a chisel tip and when would you use a conical? Or does it matter?

thanks, I have always used a chisel tip on the iron I have. But the iron is really to hot for circuit boards. I used it for awhile with diode in one leg of the cord which helped to bring the heat down. But I think I'll invest in a variable heat station now since I'll will be doing a lot of component installing.

I wonder if CSI is the only place one can get tips for the CSI-STATION1A. They sure are expensive there.

Check out mcmelectronics.com. If you are on the CSI website follow the link to the CSI-STATION-3DLF, it says its the digital version of the 1a and it takes the same tips. So then from the 3DLF page follow the lilow CEOs "link to our competitor" and they direct you to MCM. Tips are 1 dollar cheaper.

Just FYI, all tips are not created equal. The tips carried by CSI are a bit more expensive as they are a much better quality. The ones at MCM are NOT THE SAME.

Also, our Getting Started Kit at WLC Ventures has the CSI-STATION3DLF which is the replacement for the 2A. It has great features and heats up fast enough that it can be used with Lead Free Solder (not that I advise doing this..Lead Free is for EXPERIENCED folks).

I just started using the 3DLF and I LOVE IT! It is a great iron and a much better alternative to all the 10 dollar ratshack irons I have.

well.....I have one too...and I love mine....but since I sell the darn things I have to keep my mouth shut :shifty:

I didn't know that Chris. I'll have to go to your site.
I haven't bought a soldering station yet.

The more I use mine the more I realize that the 49 dollars i spent on this iron was very well spent! I like the ability to change temps quickly with the push of a button.
