Testing some 12-year old props

I made some "jumbo ornaments" about a dozen years ago -- out of coroplast. Several geometric shapes -- held together with hot glue. I haven't used them since about 2012 or 2013 and I thought it might be nice to pull them out next year. The internals are dumb RGB strips and the controller is a Renard Plus RGBW 32-channel controller. Now I've got to find a few of my old cat5 cables to connect them....

Those are great! I think you may have showed those at a MN mini back in the day.

Those couple years where dumb RGB was popular were so innovative. I miss those days.

Cool prop. Gotta love the orange cord coming outa the top....... :ROFLMAO: :D:cool:

It's a short, red cat5 cable! These props hardly weight anything and hang via the cat5 cable and rj45 jack. I do put a zip tie around the cable after plugging it in so that the plastic clip can't let go because they do blow around when hung in a tree. I hang them by attaching a heavy weight to the end of the cat5 cable and using a long pole to hoist it up over the limb of a tree. The heavy weight drops the cable down to the ground where I can attach and secure the prop, and then I can lift it up to the height I need by just pulling on the other end of the cat5 cable.

I think you're right. They were a hoot to make!

Yep. Years before the RBL's or any other available large ornaments. It's still America here -- you can still make some!!!

I still have to figure out what to do with a bunch of RGB modules that I ordered wrong (twice) that were supposed to be addressable. Maybe something like this.

Back in the day (circa 2012) you could pick up cheap ($6-ish) DMX modules that would take in power and DMX and output dumb RGB. Each one of my North Poles has one of these inside of it, and they all daisy-chain together with power and DMX going through the same Cat5 cable. This was a pretty elegant solution (I didn't come up with it) back then...
