While there was a myriad of computer-based controller hardware available that ran under the Vixen software for controlling Christmas lighting, there were no LED display panels that could be controlled through Vixen. Robert Jordan decided that the Vixen community needed a LED sign and took it upon himself to design and prototype an LED scrolling board. While Robert had seen LED boards everywhere, he wanted one that allowed you to do text and animation. He envisaged a LED display board that could be your show sign and a place to show animations during the show.

THE LEDTRIKS was born. You can read more about it here.

While there was a great takeup on the design, there were always a few capabilities or limiations with the first LEDTRIKS, namely:

*Connection via the parallel port
*Heavy load on Vixen
*Refresh rate problems, random LEDs being fired.

The Vixen pages in the wiki are somewhat disorganized. The following are some proposed (they do not apply to anything, please disregard them at this point) guidelines I thought up to make the naming and format of pages relating to Vixen more consistent.

*How-to pages are pages that contain step-by-step instructions to perform a task. Reference pages are pages that contain information that is not in step-by-step format.
*How-to pages should be linked to from the Vixen How-to's page, with the exception of troubleshooting how-tos, which should be linked to from the Vixen Troubleshooting page.
*Reference pages should be linked to from the Vixen Reference page, or another appropriate page.
*All pages should be a part of the Vixen category. Put a link to Category:Vixen at the top of the wikitext.
*How-to pages should not begin with any form of the words "How to" (ex. "Create a profile" rather than "How to create a profile").
*How-to pages should be in the present tense verb form (not progressive). To check, see if the words "How to" make sense in front of them (Ex. (How to)"Add a sequence to a program" instead of (How to)"Adding a sequence to a program")
*It is important that "in Vixen" is added to How-To titles when the fact that they are related to Vixen may not be apparent (ex. use "Set up a Renard in Vixen" rather than "Set up a Renard"). If it is obvious that the article has to do with Vixen (ex. "How to set up a LedTriks sequence"), "in Vixen" can be omitted.
*How-to pages should use the wiki software's ordered lists (by adding a pound sign at the beginning of each step, like this:
#Step 1
#Step 2
If each step is lengthy (more than a couple of sentences), it should use nested section headers (with equals signs) like this:
Blah
txt
Blah
txt
Blah
txt

In this case (nested sections), the section headers should be descriptive (ex. use "Set up the channel colors" rather than "Step 5").

You can use a picture of your house and lights in the Adjustable Preview plugin to provide a background against Vixen's computer-simulated preview.

#Open Vixen and open a sequence.
#Click on the "Attached Plugins" button in the toolbar.
#*If there is no button in any of the toolbars named "Attached Plugins" go to the top and click on "Toolbars" and make sure that the one titled execution control is checked.
#With the new window titled "Sequence Plugin Mapping" open you should see a list on the left with all the Available Plugins listed. Left click on the Adjustable Preview and then click use or Double click the Adjustable Preview plugin and it will move to the right side window box. Click on it to highlight it.
#In the "Channels" boxes, to the right, make sure you type in the number of channels you are running. IE: 1 Olsen 595 would be 1 to 64.
#Click on the "Plugin Setup" button to open the "Sequence Preview", this is where all the nitty gritty gets done.
#Click on the "Load Image" button in the toolbar and browse your computer for your file. I would recommend not going more than 1000 wide and try to keep the file size as low as possible. This picture has to be redrawn many times a second during the preview process to let you "see" the show and a large file size will slow everything down and possibly skip a bit.
#The channel list will be blank until you click on the drop down arrow. Click on that arrow and select a channel.
#Left click and hold to draw your "lights" onto your picture. If the pixel size is too big or small use the "Pixel Size" drop down menu to resize accordingly.
#The clear button allows you to clear a selected channel or all channels. Don't accidentally clear all because there is no "un-do" button.
#The "Respect Channel Output" check box allows you to see how it will go through the hardware if you have re-mapped any channels. Leaving it unchecked will not allowed re-mapped channels to show up as being re-mapped.
#This brightness bar allows you to darken your image like it is nighttime.
#Click OK to finish. Now when you play this sequence this picture will pop up and show you your sequence.

Overview
This section explains how to schedule a program in Vixen. These instructions assume you have already sequenced a few songs and have already created a program.

Opening the Scheduler
If Vixen is not already open, go ahead and open it now. Select Programs from the menu bar and then Schedule (see figure 1).

The Scheduler window will appear as shown in figure 2.

Right click on any time slot on the scheduler and select "Add". The Timer dialog box should appear (see figure 3). This dialog box is divided into three sections: Item to Execute, Execution Start, and Recurrence. We will address each section in turn.

Selecting an Item to Execute
The Item to Execute section is where you select the program or sequence you want to schedule. There are two buttons in this section:

* Select a Sequence; which activates the Open dialog box with your sequences listed

* Select a Program; which activates the Open dialog box with your programs listed

Scheduling a Sequence
To schedule a sequence, select the Select Sequence button.

If you do not see your sequences, check the "Files of type:" list box at the bottom of the dialog box and select Vixen Standard Sequence if it is not already selected. (Note: you will use this method to select scripted sequences, Ledtriks sequences and Trigger sequences also.) If you still do not see your sequences, check the “Look in:” edit box at the top of the dialog box and make sure you are in the same directory in which you store your sequences — by default this should be the “Sequences” directory.

Once you have found the sequence you want, select it by clicking on it with the mouse and then select open. (Note: you can only select one sequence per scheduled event.) You should see the title of your sequence in bold letters to the right of the Select Sequence button.

Scheduling a Program
To schedule a program, select the Select Program Button. If you do not see your program(s), check the “Look in:” edit box at the top of the dialog box and make sure you are in the same directory in which you stored your program — by default this should be the “Programs" directory. Once you have found the program you want, select it by clicking on it with the mouse and then select Open. (Note: you can only select one sequence or one program to begin during any scheduled event). You should see the title of your sequence in bold letters to the right of the Select Program button (see figure 4).

The rest of these directions assume you have chosen to schedule a program.

Scheduling Execution Start Time and Date
Next step is to establish the starting date and time for your program. Set both of these values in the Execution Start section.

Selecting the Start Date
Select the down arrow on the right side of the On drop down box, this exposes a calendar (see figure 5). Move through the calendar until you find the desired start date. Select the date and it should appear in the on drop down box.

Figure 5: Selecting a date for the scheduled event

Selecting the Start Time
Select the down arrow on the right side of the Start at: drop down box. A list of times in half-hour increments appears. Select the time closest to your desired start time. (Note: the drop down box only reflects half-hour increments, but you can edit the minutes of the selected time if you want to start at some time other than the top or bottom of the hour. For example if we wanted to start at 5:13PM, we would select 5:00 PM, then click on the minutes portion of our selected time and type in 13, then tab out and the desired time of 5:13 PM will be the scheduled start time).

The Repeat Option
Vixen 2.x gives you the option of repeating your selected sequence or program for a set period of time. Use these options only if you want to play your selection more than once during the day.

For example, assume you wanted to play the selected program in a continuous loop from 5:00PM to 10:00PM. Select the Repeat option box, this will activate the Until drop down box. Select 10:00PM in the drop down box (see figure 6). The program will now loop uninterrupted and continuously for the next 5 hours.

(Note: if you chose a start time that is not a half-hour increment, the sequence will not stop at the time you specified. For example, if you set a sequence to start at 5:13PM and loop until 10PM, it will loop until 10:13 PM. Vixen pays attention to the time it is supposed to repeat (5 hours), not the stop time.)

Figure 6: Timer Dialog Box with Repeat option selected

Assume you wanted to play your program on the top and bottom of the hours from 5:00PM to 10:00PM. Select the Every option box, this will activate the Minutes edit box. Enter the number 30 in the edit box and tab out. The selected program will now play once every half hour from 5:00PM with the last time it is played starting at 9:30PM. (Note: Vixen will only start a program or sequence if there is enough time to complete it before the end time occurs. In the example given above, it will not start playing at 10:00 PM because that is the scheduled stop time.)

Setting the Number of Days the Program Will Run
Vixen not only allows you to schedule the time to run the program, but also set which days it will run. Use the Recurrence section to set these values.

If you only want your program to play once on the date you selected, make sure the Recurrence drop down is set to None (the default value).

If you want it to play every day over a set period of time, select "Daily" from the drop down. This will activate the Start Date and End Date drop down boxes. Select the starting and ending dates.

If you wanted to only run your program on set days of the week (for example, weekdays only for two weeks), select Weekly from the drop down box, set the starting and ending dates for the time period you want, and then select the weekdays on the option boxes that appear to the right of the starting and ending dates. For this example, you would select all days except Saturday and Sunday (see figure 7).

Figure 7: Selecting a Recurring Schedule on Weekdays Only

The process is similar for the Monthly and Yearly options. More than likely, you usually use None, Daily, and Weekly. (Note: the weekly option is especially useful if you have two programs you want to play on alternating days or if you have a weekday program and a weekend program.)

Finishing the Scheduling Process
Select the "OK" button. The Time dialog box should disappear and the Scheduler should reflect the times you entered (see figure 8). Inspect the schedule and make sure it reflects what you wanted. When your are satisfied with the schedule, select OK and the Scheduler will close.

There are several different views on the Scheduler. By pressing the top row of buttons (Today, Day view, Week view, Month view, and Agenda view) you can change how your schedule is shown. Experiment with each of these views to see which one you prefer.

If you did not want the program to play during a specified time in the middle of the schedule (say you were going out of town for a few days and didn’t want to run the show while you were gone), you may disable the show without deleting the schedule. On the bottom left corner of the Scheduler dialog box, there is an option to “Disable the schedule” (red circled option on figure 8). Selecting this option suppresses all schedules and prevents them from playing until you un-check it.

Overview
This tutorial explains how to create a program in Vixen. Instructions in this section assume you have already created several sequences and are ready to pull them together to create your show.

Opening the Program Manger
If Vixen is not already open, go ahead and open it now. Select Programs from the menu bar and then Manage (see Figure 1).

Figure 1: Creating a Program in Vixen

You should end up with the Program Management dialog box that looks like Figure 2. For this tutorial, I have already sequenced 8 songs (red highlighted area in Figure 2).

Figure 2: The Program Management dialog box

Creating the program
You need to create a new program before you can add songs to it, click on the small circle with a “plus sign” in it under the Programs grouping in the dialog box (blue highlighted area in Figure 2). The New Programs dialog box should appear (see Figure 3). For this tutorial, I have elected to call this program “Demo Program”. Enter the name of your program in the text box and select OK.

Figure 3: The New Program dialog box

Adding songs to the program
The Program Management dialog box should now look similar to Figure 4. You are ready to add songs to the program. You can add all of your songs or just a subset. For this tutorial, I have elected to add only three songs, “I’ll be home for Christmas”, “Let it Snow”, and “Wizards in Winter” (yeah I know I incorrectly titled it). Select each song with the mouse and drag it from the “Available Sequences” list box to the “Program Event Sequences” list box. You will notice that as each song is added to the program, the information for the program is updated in the “Programs” list box (specifically how long the program is and how many sequences are in the program). Add your songs in the sequence you wish to play them.

Figure 4: Program Management Dialog box with program already created

Setting the plugin
If each of your sequences has a profile already assigned and you do not want to assign a universal plugin for the program, select the “Use each sequences plugin setup” radio button instead of making a master plugin as discussed in this section. If you have created a profile and wish to use a profile instead of the standard plugins discussed in this section, select the “Use a profile” radio button. Profiles are discussed in a different tutorial.

If you have not set up a plugin for each of your sequences, now is the time to set up the necessary plugins. All sequences will use the plugins defined in the program (this means if you have a plugin assigned to the sequence, the program plugin overrides the sequence plugin). Select the “Plugin Setup” button. You should now see the Sequence Plugin Mapping dialog box (Figure 5).

Figure 5: Setting up the Plugins for your Program

This demo assumes an Olsen 595 as the control board. Scroll through the “Available Plugins” list box, select Olsen (or your controller), select the “Use” button (or double click the plugin). The selected plugin should now appear in the “Plugins in Use” list box. Select the device in the “Plugins in Use” list box and update your channels (in this example I updated the two textboxes to show the starting channel is 1 and the ending channel is 64). Select the “Plugin Setup” button and you should get the Parallel Port Setup dialog box, Figure 6 (each controller has a different dialog box so if you use something other than a Grinch or a 595, yours will look different).

Figure 6: Assigning channels to parallel ports

Assign the channels to the correct parallel port and select the “OK” button. Your Sequence Mapping Plugin dialog box should now look like Figure 7.

Figure 7: Plugins assigned to the program and the correct port

If you have multiple controllers, add each of them one at a time by adding them from the “Available Plugins” list box to the “Plugins in Use” list box, update the channel count, and set up the plugin. Repeat the process until you have all channels and controller types set up.

For tutorial purposes, assume we have channels 1 through 64 on an Olsen and channels 65 through 128 on a Renard64. After completing the Olsen plugin as shown in Figure 7, select the Renard plugin and set the channels to start at 65 and end at 128. Set up the plugin similar to what we did for the Olsen (Renards are different from the Olsens and fixing up the plugin for the Renard is covered in a different tutorial). When done properly, the Sequence Plugin Mapping dialog box will look similar to Figure 8 (note the Olsen port assignment is on top and the Renard port assignment is below it).

Figure 8: Assigned plugins for multiple controllers

Select the Done button. You should now be looking at the Program Management dialog box.

Setting Cross-fade
There is an option available in managing your program and that is to cross-fade your sequences. You DO NOT need cross-fading to run a program. This is an advanced feature that you can use after you are comfortable with standard sequences. If you choose to not use cross-fading, leave the parameter set to 0 (zero) seconds.

Using the cross-fade creates a transition between songs in your program. Specifically, it fades-out the ending song concurrently with fading-in the next song. So if you wanted a 3 second transition from each ending song to the next song, both lights and music, you would set cross-fade to "3".

For this tutorial, assume we wanted a four second, simply set up the Cross-fade text box to "4". Remember, this is a universal setting; therefore you cannot assign it to individual songs, it applies to all songs in the program. After setting the cross-fade, your dialog box should look like Figure 9.

Figure 9: Completed program to include cross-fading

Saving the Program
You are now ready to close and save the program. Select the OK button. You should get the save changes dialog box shown in Figure 10. Select Yes. You have now created and saved your program.

Vixen Basics
The bare minimum things you need to know to get your show up and running.
*How to sequence a song: To be constructed
* How to make a Program How to create a program from existing sequences.
* How to make a Schedule This explains how to schedule when your sequences and programs will play.

Intermediate Skills
These skills can provide nice touches to your Vixen experience.

*Adding A Background Picture to the Adjustable Preview Plugin

Advanced Skills
These skills can make Vixen do things that you wouldn't believe were possible.

Troubleshooting How-To's
Did something go wrong? See the Vixen Troubleshooting page for common problems and steps to fix them.

Quick Tips
How-To: Change the relative intensity of multiple cells at once

With the following shortcuts the user can increase/decrease the relative intensity of multiple cells.

Ctrl-Up / Ctrl-Down = up / down @ 5% increments (configurable via preferences)

Ctrl-Alt-Up / Ctrl-Alt-Down = up / down @ 1% increments

Example:

Two cells are selected one is at 10% the other at 100%. With these shortcuts you can decrease their values by 5% making their new intensities 5% and 95% respectively.

Although Vixen provides a standard set of plugins for a variety of hardware, individuals with different or custom hardware will need to develop their own plugin. Plugin development requires Microsoft Visual Studio, or another development environment for coding and compilation using Microsoft's .NET framework.

Example Source Code
Source code for the Parallel 12 plugin is available to assist plugin developers. The plugin is written in C# and works with Vixen 1.*.

Modifications are required for the plugin to work with Vixen 2.0:
* Change the <code>Parallel12</code> class to implement the <code>IEventDrivenOutputPlugIn</code>, <code>IOutputPlugIn</code>, <code>IPlugIn</code> interfaces instead of the <code>PlugIn</code> interface.
* Change the first parameter of the the <code>Initialize</code> to <code>IExecutable executable</code>. The <code>List<Channels> Channels</code> property of <code>IExecutable</code> can be used in place of the <code>Channel[] channels</code> parameter.
* In the <code>get</code> method for the <code>HardwareMap</code> property, change the call to <code>new HardwareMap</code> to pass the string constant <code>"Parallel"</code> as its first parameter. The enumeration <code>PortType</code> no longer exists.

The following describes various options on Vixen's toolbars. Items with an asterisk (*) are only available when a sequence is open.

Sequence Menu
;New event Sequence
:Allows you to create a new sequence. Choose a sequence type from the sub-menu - if you are unsure, you probably want a "Vixen standard sequence".

;Open an event sequence
:Allows you to open a sequence you have saved previously.

;Save and Save As *
:Allows you to save the sequence to disk. Note that sequences are saved in the Sequences directory of your Vixen program folder by default. You should not save them any other place, or you will have trouble using certain functions of the program.

;Export and Import channel names list *
:The Export command generates a text file with a list of the channel names in the current sequence. The Import command takes a list in the same format (one channel per line) and imports the names into your current sequence.

;Print channel configuration *
:This command prints out your channels. The submenu allows you to order order them by "natural channel order" (the order you see them in the editor) or by "channel output" (the order in which they are sent to your hardware). This can be useful when setting up your display.

;Audio *
:Brings up the Audio menu, where you can select music for your sequence and also add events to the sequence by tapping certain keys while the music plays.

;Channel output mask *
:Allows you to enable or disable channels for output.

;Settings *
:This panel allows you to set sequence-specific settings, including the minimum and maximum illumination level for output. This specifies what the minimum and maximum values in the sequence are.
:This panel also allows you to set the event period length. This is the length of time represented by one column on the grid.

;Set background sequence
:This allows you to select a scripted sequence to run in the background when no other sequences are running. This can be used to, for example, clear all channels on a controller periodically so they do not leave lights on during the day. (Most hardware controllers do not have this problem.)

;Recent
:This gives a list of sequences you have recently used. You can click on them to open them.

Programs Menu
;Manage
:Opens the program manager, where you can create, edit and delete programs.

;Schedule
:Opens the scheduler, where you can schedule when sequences and programs run automatically.

;Restart current timers
:This starts any items that are scheduled to be running right now. It can be used to start any items that you had stopped or that didn't start for some reason.

Profiles
;Manage
:Opens the profile manager, where you can create, edit, and delete profiles and channel groups.

;Create profile from sequence *
:This takes the settings from the current sequence and wraps them all up into a profile so you can use the same settings in other sequences.

;Attach sequence to profile *
:This allows you to apply the settings from a profile you have already created to the current sequence.

;Detach sequence from its profile *
:This removes a sequence's association with a profile. Any changes made to the profile will no longer have any effect on the sequence.

;Flatten profile into sequence *
:This takes any settings from the profile and applies them directly to the sequence. This is important when sharing sequence files - that way all the settings are in the sequence directly and it doesn't need your profile for someone else to view it.

;Create channel groups from sequence channels *
:This opens the channel groups editor, where a list of the channels in your sequence is available. You can make a channel group using the sequences in the list.

This document is a work in progress.

General
Timer Check Frequency
How often Vixen should look at the time to see if a scheduled item should be running.

A smaller number could have an effect on computer performance, but will increase the precision of item start times.

A larger number will decrease the accuracy of scheduled item start times, but will affect performance less.

Mouse Wheel
Client Name
Preferred Sequence Type
Determines which sequence type should be the default in various options in the program.

For this setting, choose the sequence type you use most.

Auto Shutdown
If the box here is checked, Vixen will automatically shut down the computer at the specified time.

For example, this setting could be used to shut off the show computer after all programs are finished for the night.

Disable Auto-Update
If this box is checked, Vixen will not connect to the internet when you start Vixen to see if a newer version is available.

Choose this option if you are not continuously connected to the internet.

Backup History Images
New Sequence Settings
Event Period Length
Determines how often vixen, by default, will update controllers when a sequence is playing.

Minimum and Maximum Illumination Level
Selects the minimum and maximum values sequences can be set to use.

Default Profile
Sets which profile should be used by default.

The "Create new" button adds a new, blank profile to the list,

Default Sequence Audio Device
Determines which of your computer's audio devices should be used by default for sequences.

Use the sequence wizard
If this box is checked, Vixen will use a wizard to walk you through creating a new sequence. If it is not checked, Vixen will create a blank sequence with the default values.

If a wizard is not available for the sequence type you select, Vixen will automatically just create a blank sequence with the default values.

Sequence Editing
Max column width and row height
Determines the maximum size of columns and rows in the editing grid for standard sequences.

Intensity adjust large change
Determines how much (in percent points) the intensity of selected cells should change per key press if you hold down the control key and use the up or down arrow keys to increase or decrease the intensity.

Auto size event Sequences
Save zoom levels
If this box is checked, Vixen will save the zoom levels in the sequence grid so they will be used each time you open the sequence.

Show save confirmation
If this box is checked, Vixen will display a message when a sequence has been saved successfully.

Show natural channel number
If this box is checked, Vixen will display a channel's number next to its name on the left side of the editing grid.

Sequence Execution
Show Position Marker
If this box is checked, Vixen will display a line at the current time in the sequence as it plays.

Auto scrolling
If this box is checked, Vixen will automatically scroll the window so the currently playing part of the sequence is in view.

Save plugin dialog positions
If this box is checked, the position of windows used by plugins will always appear in the same place.

For example, the Adjustable Preview plugin would display in the same place every time. You can drag it to one position and it will not reset every time the sequence plays.

Reset controller at end of sequences
If this box is checked, Vixen will turn all outputs on a controller off after a sequence is finished playing.

Audio Log
Sets options to log what sequences were played.

An example use of this option is if you are required to show what songs you have played for radio liscence purposes.

Log manual sequence executions - sets whether to log sequences you started manually (e.g. opening the sequence and clicking play)
Log scheduled sequence executions - sets whether to log sequences started by the scheduler
Log music player executions - sets whether to log songs played in the music player.
Log Path - sets where to save the log file.

Background Items
Background Sequence
If "enable background sequence" is selected, the background script that you chose will run when no other items are running.

The "background sequence delay" box sets how long to wait after an executing item has finished before starting the background sequence.

Music
Advanced
Remote Execution
Welcome to the ChristmasWiki! This is the official wiki for the DIY Christmas display community.<br />
Everything you read here is a contribution from the members of DoItYourselfChristmas.com. If you would like to make a contribution, please do as we all have ideas to share. The more content we have, the better we become.

Contributions do not have to be specific to Christmas. Information here can include anything that can or is used for any holiday display like Halloween or the 4th of July. It can be a simple trick to make your display easier to put up and take down, or a detailed set of instructions for building an amazing prop. If we get a small contribution from every member then we will have the largest collection of How-Tos and Tips of any display-oriented site on the Internet. So let's all write up an article or two.

:Allows you to open a sequence you have saved previously.

;Save and Save As
:This option is only available when a sequence is open.
:Allows you to save the sequence to disk. Note that sequences are saved in the Sequences directory of your Vixen program folder by default. You should not save them any other place, or you will have trouble using certain functions of the program.

;Export and Import channel names list
:This option is only available when a sequence is open.
:The Export command generates a text file with a list of the channel names in the current sequence. The Import command takes a list in the same format (one channel per line) and imports the names into your current sequence.

;Print channel configuration
:This option is only available when a sequence is open.
:This command prints out your channels. The submenu allows you to order order them by "natural channel order" (the order you see them in the editor) or by "channel output" (the order in which they are sent to your hardware). This can be useful when setting up your display.

;Audio
:This option is only available when a sequence is open.
:Brings up the Audio menu, where you can select music for your sequence and also add events to the sequence by tapping certain keys while the music plays.

;Channel output mask
:This option is only available when a sequence is open.
:Allows you to enable or disable channels for output.

;Settings
:This option is only available when a sequence is open.

===Programs Menu==

Profiles
;Manage
:Opens the profile manager, where you can create, edit, and delete profiles and channel groups.

;Create profile from sequence
:This option is only available when a sequence is open.
:This takes the settings from the current sequence and wraps them all up into a profile so you can use the same settings in other sequences.

;Attach sequence to profile
:This option is only available when a sequence is open.
:This allows you to apply the settings from a profile you have already created to the current sequence.

;Detach sequence from its profile
:This option is only available when a sequence is open.
:This removes a sequence's association with a profile. Any changes made to the profile will no longer have any effect on the sequence.

;Flatten profile into sequence
:This option is only available when a sequence is open.
:This takes any settings from the profile and applies them directly to the sequence. This is important when sharing sequence files - that way all the settings are in the sequence directly and it doesn't need your profile for someone else to view it.

;Create channel groups from sequence channels
:This option is only available when a sequence is open.
:This opens the channel groups editor, where a list of the channels in your sequence is available. You can make a channel group using the sequences in the list.
