There are a myriad of computer based controller hardware  available that will run under the Vixen softwareWhile Robert Jordan was working on his LEDTRIKs, a LED panel based display, he noted that the same driver IC chip could replace two different types of chips used on the Olsen 595 COOP board.
Assembling the GRINCH should be fairly easy for most hobbyists.  The following sequence of steps is by no means the only way to do thisIt is simply a suggested order of events to achieve the desired goal.


Robert’s aim was to come up with a circuit design for a controller that was smaller, cheaper, and easier to construct than the Olsen 595. He had to give it a name and decided on the ‘GRINCH’ after his favourite Christmas movie. The details of his prototype are detailed on the Computer Christmas website.

*Start by checking the PCB over for any production faults.  Ensure that none of the tracks are shorted or open and that all holes are clear.

The GRINCH does what you expect it to do – it makes lights flash under control of Vixen. It does not have Channel LEDs, it does not dim lights, and it does not use PICs. The GRINCH does work and it is cheap!

*Install the four 0.1uF capacitors (PN# 581-SA105E104Z).  These capacitors have no polarity to worry about.

*Install the power LED (PN# 604-WP7104GC).  The LED must be oriented correctly, if your LED has a flat side then match that to the overlay on the PCB.  If not, then the shorter lead of the LED is the cathode and will go in the square solder pad.

*Install the power LED resistor (PN# 660-CF1/4C471J).  Make sure that the resistor has a value of 470ohms (yellow/violet/brown/gold stripes).  The resistor has no polarity to worry about.

*Install the power connector at J2 (PN# 538-70543-0001).  The square pad signifies the +5 VDC connection.


The circuit is based on four MBI5027-GN-5027 16 Bit Constant current LED Sink Driver Integrated Circuits.  The PC is connected to the GRINCH via the RJ45 connector IN. You will need to assemble an interface cable to connect from the PC to the IN socket on the GRINCH controller. The cable details are specified in the Building the Interface Cable section.
*Install the 2 pin vertical header at J1 (PN# 538-22-03-2021).

*Install the four 24 pin IC sockets (PN# 571-3902618).  The sockets must be all aligned in the same direction with pin 1 of each socket aligned with the square solder pad.  Another way to verify that you installed them correctly is that the notch on the top of each socket will be toward the RJ45 IN/OUT connections.

Board Assembly

Assembling the GRINCH should be fairly easy for most hobbyists. The following sequence of steps is by no means the only way to do this. It is simply a suggested order of events to achieve the desired goal.


  • Start by checking the PCB over for any production faults. Ensure that none of the tracks are shorted or open and that all holes are clear.


  • Install the four 0.1uF capacitors (PN# 581-SA105E104Z). These capacitors have no polarity to worry about.


  • Install the power LED (PN# 604-WP7104GC). The LED must be oriented correctly, if your LED has a flat side then match that to the overlay on the PCB. If not, then the shorter lead of the LED is the cathode and will go in the square solder pad.
