That is a great article. I had stumbled across an article the other day that I think could be useful also. The article is "How to take AWESOME night photos WITHOUT a tripod" at instructables.com. They have a bunch of articles on soldering and lots of other things.
This article does not specifically discuss Photos of Christmas lights but taking night photos.
I haven't read the entire article yet, but one of the starting quotes killed me:
"Understanding this will ensure that your photos are way better than those of your neighbors. After all, isn't that what Christmas lights are really about?"
