Is there a convention for what end of a xConnect pigtail is data out, and data in?

For example is the data out on the male or female xConnect?

I'd expect female to be controller side .

you plug males in so I expect to plug in my lights so the data in side is male for me.

I also found blogs talk about keeping the hot end on the female plug not unlike a wall receptacle.
