All integrated circuit chips have a identifier to help you locate Pin 1 on the chip. IC pins are numbered in a counter clockwise fashion from pin 1. The various means to identify Pin 1 include:
- A Circle or Dot next to Pin 1
- A Half Circle or Notch on the end of the chip, Pin 1 is to the left of the notch.
- A Beveled Edge or Notch down one side of pins of the IC, Pin 1 is the left most pin on the notched side
- A Beveled Edge on the end of the package, Pin 1 is to tleft of the Beveled Edge.
For pictures of these methods, see this document.
