LOR and Vixen

Since this topic seems to be popping up more and more these days, I wanted to get a general post about how this would be done, what you can do, etc!

<<note, I do not have LOR, or a LOR board - so this is done purely off reading>>

To control your LOR boards with Vixen:

First Step: Create a custom CAT5 cable, you will need either a XLR to CAT5 or a custom CAT5 depending on what dongle you choose to use.

The DIY Controllers use the USITT reccommended CAT5 spec, so a custom wired cat5 is necessary.

hmmm....frank....this is good wiki fodder....

I think that some of the LOR users are starting to realize that we’re not a bunch of geeky people (OK, maybe some of us are).

Our controllers are no longer just a bunch of relays and wires anymore and you don’t need to know programming.

Now they can wonder over to the DIY side while retaining their somewhat more expensive hardware that they currently have and try their hand at creating the hardware themselves.

I'm a living example! I lurked around PC and here for a long time before deciding I wanted the go the "easy" (but expensive!) way and get some LOR controllers last season. I have now seen the light and will probably sell off my LOR controllers after this season once my Helix is 100% and I've proven out my RenSimple controllers.

I started off with DIY hardware, moved to LOR a few years ago, and am now expanding my system with DIY hardware.

Wasn't there a Jim Beam ad series like this? ;)

budude :) that was good.

Because of LOR my interest was peaked into the DIY area which has been quite interesting and defiantly more cost effective. It's a bit of a learning curve to come over to DIY from LOR. I'm grateful you all are friendly as you have saved me a load of time pointing out the links to read and such.

I just want to know who else has been buying up all the parts? ;)

who are coming to DIY in droves.... ;) ;) ;)

I jumped into LOR this year purchasing 2 16 channel commercial type controllers and than stared digging in deeper to DIY. Today I ordered 20 Enclosures, 8 SS24 pcb's and all the parts from Mouser for what I paid for my LOR I can build 6 24 channel controllers. I will most likely try to incorporate my 2 LOR controllers into my DIY. Now just to figure out how to make them run with Vixen. LOR is great if you have money to burn, my supporting wife reminded me that we don't so DIY here I come. I also purchased a Weller soldering station. Christmas shopping is now officially over!!!

If you want to use Vixen, the easiest way is to go DMX as all the controllers can run it. There is a LOR plug-in available here but I'm not sure it's in a solid state to use.

Another possiblity is to use LightShowPro which can run both controller types natively but it's not free and it's a bit more of a learning curve but has more features as well.

I guess I'm one of those bouncing balls. When I first decided I wanted to automate my lights several years ago, I searched the internet and found the DIY community. Macrosill and some others wet my appetite. At the time I didn't believe I had the skills (or patience) to do DIY although I bought an original 595 board that is still sitting in my office unpopulated. It was DAN (LOR) coming down to the South NJ Mini that gave me a quick solution. I have been in LOR land for the last 4 years.

Only now that I'm looking to integrate some of my pro DJ DMX fixtures have I wandered back to DIY. I'm here for good now. I have 5 LOR Controllers and a REN48LSD. I'm grateful to Dan and the LOR community. Their customer service is by far one of the best I've ever dealth with.

Going forward it will be ReN or anything else that is compatible with DMX that some of our talented friends dream up.

I always wanted a LEDTRIX but now that I see PIXELS out there, I'm holding out for an RGB solution.

Hi everyone...
So after reading all this it kinda answered my questions.
But let me tell you a quick timeline. Last year bought a 16ch LOR controler and software package. Ran about 1k LED light light show. It was fun and all learn as you go kinda thing. But now... I want to go with the pixles!! I looked into LOR and pretty much everything i have wont work with RGBs. I'll have to upgrade my software ($150) get control boards and lights. So my question is this...should I jump the LOR ship and go the vixen route? Just tryn to get opinions and suggestions.
Thx...
George
