OK-Mini PLUS 2008

Some bad news. I just found out that I have to go into work tomorrow and will miss the Mini :( I hope you guys all have a good time and I will make the next one.

Greg,

Thank you and Tom for hosting this past week end 'Mini'! (I now understand what a Mini is) My wife and I had a great time, both in Bricktown Friday evening and at your home on Saturday. As I'd hoped, I got some great ideas and can now associate faces with the words of fellow light nuts like me! Be sure and thank Maggie, Catherine, Sara with an H, and Michael for putting up with us all!

For those that haven't been to Oklahoma City for awhile, 'Bricktown' is an old warehouse district in the center of the city that has been re-invented as a tourist area. The name of the area fits perfectly as the streets and buildings are built of red brick. Stores and restaurants line a canal that meanders for a couple of miles through the district. There are waterfalls and sculptures along the canal that add a unique-ness to the place. I really wished I'd been able to spend more time than I did exploring it.

Tom Gore (Santa's Helper on PC) was co-host with Greg for this event. He owns and operates a Haunted House ride attraction in the center of Bricktown. It's a very unique ride as it's 3-D (everyone is given 3-D glasses to wear) and utiizes 'actors' to add realistic touches. He's a pretty savy guy as he uses his antimated light show as part of his business and therefore can deduct everything from his taxes!! Tom's business display is featured on Greg Young's 'Holiday Lights 2007' DVD. Not only did Tom allow us to experience his ride, but he arranged for everyone to ride the 'water-taxi'. The water-taxi is a guided tour boat piloted by 'Captain Rick' who's 3/4 comedian and 1/4 historian. I learned more about Oklahoma in one hour with Captain Rick than I'd ever known before.

I was totally blown away by Greg's DIY controller based on the Propeller micro-p with an integrated a Xbee wireless serial link. Greg developed a custom plug-in for Vixen and demonstrated the whole setup by driving his mega-tree as the sun set. The Propeller has been added to my long list of things to do!

Thanks again for a wonderful job of hosting!

Brian - We're on the same wavelength! When I looked at the pics, I thought about replying with a main link, but got sidetracked...
Looks like you all had a bunch of fun!

Sorry for taking so long to get this posted. Greg and Tom did an outstanding job of organizing and hosting the mini. It was my first ever mini and I'm looking forward to my next. With several folks sharing their display ideas and techniques, it makes me wish it was February again so I would have more time to plan and implement some of them. Thanks and kudos to Greg and Tom and to the other more experienced folks that shared their hard-earned knowledge. I am always impressed at how willing folks are to share their skills to help a newbie. Thanks again. It was well worth the time, effort and gas to get there. --- Gene.
